When Is the Best Time to Visit Running Y? A Season-by-Season Guide

August 1, 2026

People ask us this a lot: when should we come? The honest answer is that Running Y works differently depending on what you’re after. Golf season looks different from ski season, and a family week in July has a different rhythm than a quiet January reset. Here’s how each season actually feels on the ground, so you can pick the one that matches your trip instead of guessing.

A Four-Season Resort

Running Y sits at the base of the Cascades in Klamath Falls, part of Southern Oregon that sees 300 sunny days a year. The lodge, spa, and Ruddy Duck Restaurant run year-round, and the Arnold Palmer Signature Course stays open through the seasons too, though winter tee times depend on weather and course conditions. Whatever season you land in, the same idea holds: come for a few days, not a few hours. That’s when the golf, the spa, and the lake actually get to do their part.

Spring (March-May)

This is shoulder season, and it’s a good one. The course wakes up, the trails clear, and rates haven’t hit summer levels yet. It’s a strong window for couples pairing a round of golf with spa time, since availability is open on both sides and neither has to be rushed. A typical spring stay: arrive, settle in, and have dinner at Ruddy Duck; golf in the morning and spa in the afternoon the next day; a slow last morning with coffee before checkout. Three nights gives this enough room to breathe. Book 60 to 120 days out if tee times matter to your trip, since spring golf demand builds early.

Summer (June-August)

Summer is when Running Y fills up, and for good reason. Long days, warm afternoons, and the lake at its best make this the family season. Rooms and tee times get tight on weekends, so if your dates are flexible, a midweek arrival opens up more room to move. A family week here usually looks like one full adventure day (trails, lake, the pool), a golf or spa day for the adults while the kids have the run of the property, and enough slack in the schedule that nobody’s watching the clock. Three or more nights is the sweet spot. Two nights is a quick visit; three is a trip.

Fall (September-November)

Fall is Southern Oregon showing off a little: cooler mornings, color in the trees, and a lighter crowd than summer. It’s also when Crater Lake, about an hour north, is at its clearest before winter weather moves in. September brings Klamath Basin Oktoberfest right on the property, and the shoulder months on either side of it bring some of the best golf weather of the year. This is a strong season for group golf trips and basecamp-style stays built around a Crater Lake day, since the pace outside matches the pace we’re going for inside.

Winter (December-February)

Winter is the quiet season, and that’s the point. The lodge stays warm, the spa fills up fast on weekends, and the course plays when conditions allow. We won’t promise golf on a given week, but plenty of guests come specifically for the reset rather than the round. A three-night winter stay tends to include a slower rhythm: a fire, a spa afternoon, dinner at Ruddy Duck, and enough downtime that the trip feels like it did something. If you can work remotely, midweek stays (Sunday through Thursday) are the best-kept secret of the season: quiet, roomy, and simple to arrange last-minute.

Booking Windows by Season

Summer weekends and long weekends fill up first, so book those a few weeks to a couple of months ahead. Spring and fall golf trips do best booked 60 to 120 days out if tee times are the priority. Winter is the most forgiving season for last-minute planning, especially midweek. Whatever the season, check our current Packages & Offers before booking, since what’s running can change.

Why Three Nights, Not Two

Two nights covers arrival and one full day. Three nights covers arrival, two full days, and a slower last morning, which is usually when a trip starts to feel like it did what it was supposed to do. That extra night doesn’t just add a golf round or a spa visit; it’s the difference between checking a box and actually resetting. That holds true in every season, but it matters most in winter and fall, when the whole point of coming is to slow down.

Where to Stay, Season to Season

The Lodge works well for couples and smaller groups in any season, close to the course, the spa, and Ruddy Duck. Vacation homes make more sense for families or groups of golfers, especially in summer and during shoulder-season group trips, when a kitchen and separate bedrooms matter more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best month to visit Running Y Resort?

It depends on the trip. Spring and fall (April-May and September-October) offer a strong mix of good weather, open availability, and lighter crowds for golf and couples getaways. Summer is best for families who want the lake and long days. Winter suits guests looking for a quiet reset.

Is Running Y open year-round?

Yes. The lodge, spa, and Ruddy Duck Restaurant operate year-round, and the Arnold Palmer Signature Course is open through the seasons, weather permitting in winter.

Can you golf at Running Y in the winter?

Golf is available when weather and course conditions allow, but winter play isn’t guaranteed. Spring through fall is the most reliable window for tee times.

How far is Running Y from Crater Lake National Park?

About an hour’s drive, making it a straightforward day trip in any season the park roads are open.

How many nights should I plan to stay?

Three nights is the sweet spot for most trips. It’s enough time to golf, visit the spa, explore, and still have a slow morning before you leave.
